Dominant Mourinho: Chelsea boss boasts stunning stats over his Premier League rivals
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was at his tactical best in Saturday evening’s victory over rivals Manchester United, and the win has left the Blues needing just six points to seal the Premier League title.
The Red Devils bossed the stats with over 70% possession and over double the efforts on goal than Mourinho’s men, but it was the Portuguese who took the plaudits.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho provides tactical blueprint to defeat Man United
Jose Mourinho continues to claim ‘campaign against Chelsea’ despite Man United victory
While Chelsea have their critics over the way in which they’ve played this season – particularly with their last four domestic fixtures having been won by just a single goal margin – the Blues boss is having the last laugh.
Along with sitting ten points clear of second place Arsenal at the top of the Premier League – as this graphic by Oulala shows, Mourinho has been dominant over his closest rivals – Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City – in his two spells in England with the Stamford Bridge outfit.
In 190 Premier League fixtures, the 52-year-old has won an incredible 133 and lost just 18.
What’s more, for all the ‘park the bus’ quips aimed at Chelsea’s tactics, the Blues have scored 351 goals during Mourinho’s two spells with the club – with only Arsenal having scored more in the same period.
Chelsea are set to return the Premier League trophy for the first time since the 2009-10 season under Carlo Ancelotti. For all the Portuguese’s critics, he has expertly maintained his team’s position at the top of the league – and the fact of the matter is, no other Premier League manager has been able to keep up with the ingenuity of the Special One this term.

Jamie Carragher takes to Twitter to criticise certain Liverpool players following FA Cup loss
This seems like a dig at Sterling and Henderson…
As we all know by now, Liverpool were humbled yesterday by Aston Villa in the FA Cup, and we deserved to lose.
No players were at their best against a side threatened by Premier League relegation – and after falling behind 2-1 – we rarely created the necessary decisive chances.
Like many Liverpool fans, former centre-back Jamie Carragher took to Twitter in somewhat of a rage following the hapless performance – and appeared to single out the players involved in contract sagas for special criticism, as well as slamming our recruitment policy…
Big games need big players to do big things. Not many of them at Lfc which make wages demands of some ridiculous & the recruitment worse.
— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) April 19, 2015
Raheem Sterling has turned down a £100k-per-week contract offer from Liverpool this season (via BBC Sport), and has refused to enter discussions until the summer, while captain Jordan Henderson is demanding £100k-per-week himself (via Daily Mail).
No Liverpool players looked worthy of a six-figure contract versus Villa, although we would ideally like both Sterling and Henderson to sign new deals, as Coutinho and Ibe have already done this campaign.

As pointed out by football writer Daniel Storey on Twitter, the Saints made huge amounts from the sales of Dejan Lovren to Liverpool, Luke Shaw to Manchester United and Calum Chambers to Arsenal, but have conceded 20 fewer goals than they did at this stage last season.
Southampton sold three defenders for £65m last summer. Have conceded 20 fewer goals than at this stage last season. Mightily impressive.
— Daniel Storey (@danielstorey85) April 20, 2015
In addition to that, Ronald Koeman’s side have the best goals-against record in the Premier League this season, better than the clubs they sold those players to, with Reds ace Lovren looking the worst buy of the lot as Brendan Rodgers’ side let in 12 more than the Croatian’s old team.
Southampton even have a better defence than league leaders and champions-elect Chelsea, conceding two fewer so far as they close in on a hugely impressive season with some smart signings of their own in Toby Alderweireld and Ryan Bertrand, while others like Jose Fonte and Nathaniel Clyne have improved hugely under their new manager.

Southampton may well lose more big names this summer, but they have shown their stars that they might not necessarily be better off elsewhere after a change in fortunes for Lovren, Shaw and Chambers.
Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard faces painful prospect of leading guard of honour at Stamford Bridge
Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard’s failure to qualify for the FA Cup final on his birthday could be further compounded by the painful reality that he could be leading his team in a guard of honour for champions-elect Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next month, the Daily Mail reports.
The Reds take on Chelsea on May 10th which could be the first fixture following the Blues clinching the Premier League title which would mean a guard of honour for the champions.
Gerrard doesn’t possess many happy memories in fixtures against Chelsea, not least his now infamous slip which effectively ended Liverpool’s title hopes last season, and applauding Jose Mourinho’s side onto the pitch would be slightly awkward.

The experienced stopper has enjoyed 11 fine years at Chelsea, winning the Champions League as well as three Premier League crowns, four FA Cups and the Europa League. However, the return from loan of Thibault Courtois this season has relegated Cech to the bench.
While the former Stade Rennais man has served the Pensioners nobly from the bench this season, he will be keen to move for first team football next season.
It is no secret that Arsenal are interested in the keeper, while Le 10 Sport have also named Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, AS Roma and Inter Milan as the other clubs interested in his signature.
It is believed that a fee of € 14 million would be enough to tempt Chelsea to part ways with the world-class keeper.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard blames nerves for FA Cup semi-final exit at the hands of Aston Villa
The Northern Irishman has come under pressure recently after his side lost to Aston Villa in their FA Cup semi final encounter. This has ended their chances of any silverware this season. The Reds also look unlikely to qualify for next year’s Champions League, as they are currently seven points off the Premier League top four, albeit with a game in hand.
However, Murphy doesn’t think that this is completely the 42-year-old’s fault. The Merseyside club have had to deal with the departure of star player Luis Suarez this season, as well as an unsettled Raheem Sterling. Captain Steven Gerrard is also leaving Anfield in the summer, meaning a new problem is on the horizon.
The 38-year-old said: “Brendan [Rodgers] is there for the long haul. He’s moved the club forward. Some of the problems this year were out of his hands. He couldn’t have predicted what Luis Suarez was going to do in the World Cup, meaning he had to revamp his squad. Daniel Sturridge has had some horrendous injuries this year.”
He did add though: “What you could question is some of the recruitment at Liverpool. Have the signings worked? £19m on Lazar Markovic, yes he’s talented but has he’s not produced yet. Rickie Lambert hasn’t played enough, Fabio Borini was £10m.
“Mario Balotelli was £16m, he’s not worked. Dejan Lovren, who cost £20m, has hardly played. Is £18m Mamadou Sakho the answer? That’s where I would put the question mark.”

Liverpool complete signing of Caoimhin Kelleher
Reds have finalised a deal for talented young Irish stopper…
Tiny Irish club Ringmahon Rangers have confirmed via their Twitter page that 16-year-old keeper Caoimhin Kelleher has signed a contract with Liverpool…
The teenager starts for the Irish Under-17 national side, and has signed a four year deal with us.
Congratulations to Caoimhin Kelleher who officially signed for @LFC last night well done to Caoimhin & his family http://ift.tt/1ONWeSG
— Ringmahon Rangers (@RingmahonRanger) April 16, 2015
Kelleher has been impressive in youth football for Ringmahon Rangers, and has earned a professional deal with Liverpool as a result, although he won’t be competing with Simon Mignolet for a first-team spot any time soon…
Instead, Kelleher will battle with Lawrence Vigouroux, Ryan Fulton and Danny Ward – among others – for game time in the youth sides.
Kelleher will be hoping he joins a long list of successful Irish footballers – including Steve Heighway, Steve Finnan, Mark Lawrenson, John Aldridge and Steve Finnan – to name but a few.
Fans will of course hope for more high profile signings during the summer, and with Brad Jones proving a below-par deputy for Simon Mignolet, the Reds could well sign a more senior reserve goalkeeper to compete with the Belgian for the no.1 spot.

Manchester City plan offers for England trio, including Liverpool contract rebel Sterling
Manchester City are preparing an audacious trio of deals for England internationals Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley and Jay Rodriguez in order to meet the homegrown quota.
Reports suggest that the Citizens’ primary focus in the summer is on adding English talent to their ranks with a plethora of overseas talent at the club.
The imminent departure of Frank Lampard to the MLS, combined with James Milner’s uncertain future at the Etihad Stadium, is causing understandable concern with the club hierarchy over the lack of homegrown players in the Manchester City squad.

Raheem Sterling could buy out Liverpool contract to force £25m Chelsea move
As such, according to the Daily Mail, the reigning Premier League champions have earmarked Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling, Everton midfielder Ross Barkley and Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez as the England internationals that they would like to add to the first-team.
In particular, City chiefs are reportedly excited at the prospect of the Merseyside pair injecting some much needed youth into the ageing Sky Blues midfield.
Both Sterling and Barkley, however, are expected to command huge transfer fees. Particularly the Reds forward, who could cost around a staggering £50m; though with just a year left on his current contract, Liverpool could be forced into accepting an offer of half the figure desired.
Saints’ Rodriguez, on the other hand, could be a risky signing – given he has spent over a year on the sidelines due to injury, and is yet to make his comeback.

“Rodgers out, Klopp in”: Twitter reacts to Liverpool’s FA Cup semi-final loss to Aston Villa
Liverpool’s surprise 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley provoked strong reaction from fans on social media site Twitter.
Playmaker Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring for the Reds after half-an-hour, but efforts from Villa’s Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph ended the Merseysiders’ dream of reaching the final.
It also left Liverpool head coach Brendan Rodgers still without a piece of silverware to his name in his managerial career, and some supporters called for his removal after the defeat, with one suggesting outgoing Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp should take his place.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the result:

To make it worse the Reds skipper had several chances in the last ten minutes to draw things level and perhaps take the encounter to extra time. He only managed a tame effort from a free kick on the edge of the area and had a header cleared off the line by the Villans.
The former England international also looked off the pace in the Merseyside club’s midfield, slowing down moves with ‘Hollywood’ passes and looking very susceptible to the counter attack. This was especially evident as Brendan Rodgers’ side has been looking strong in the middle of the park in recent matches.
Now the 34-year-old has only six games left in his Anfield career, and will be hoping to help his side at least challenge for the Champions League qualification places. However, with the team seven points away from fourth placed Manchester City this may be a tall order.

Philippe Coutinho had given Brendan Rodgers’s men the perfect start at Wembley, when he opened the scoring after half an hour. But goals from Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph meant that it would Tim Sherwood’s side that would face Arsenal at the end of May.
Simon Mignolet 6
Made a decent save early on, but could have perhaps done better with the two goals he conceded. However, the defeat was certainly not his fault.
Emre Can 5
Not his best game for the club by any means. He looked tired early on, and never really recovered.
Martin Skrtel 5
The centre-back’s three game absence was highlighted by his rustiness today. Failed to lead the back line.
Dejan Lovren 3
It’s difficult to see him having a future at the club with his form continuing to be a worry. Should have definitely done better with the second goal, but let Delph turn him all too easily.

However, even the most loyal of Reds could not deny the fact that Gerrard, an iconic figure who has won us a multitude of games including an FA Cup final on his own, had a bad afternoon at Wembley against Aston Villa.
Nor would they attempt to claim that Rodgers, who masterminded our second place finish in the league last season – an incredible achievement considering our record in recent years – didn’t get it wrong with his team selection.
The instant pain in the aftermath of a defeat can lead to people saying things they might later regret, particularly in this social media age.

Tim Sherwood ready to let Liverpool target Christian Benteke leave Aston Villa
The Reds took the lead on the half-hour mark through Philippe Coutinho, only to see in-form Villa targetman Christian Benteke restore parity soon afterwards and midfielder Fabian Delph net the winner early in the second period.
It continues the upturn in fortunes which has come about at the Midlands club since Tim Sherwood took over as manager in February.
In stark contrast, it is a huge blow for Liverpool counterpart Brendan Rodgers, who has still not won a major honour in his managerial career.
It was a day to forget for the Northern Irishman, who also saw rivals Manchester City beat West Ham United in the Premier League, damaging Liverpool’s chances of catching the fourth-placed Blues and earning qualification for next season’s Champions League.
Instead today belonged to Villa, who were good value for their victory thanks to a hard-working display laced with quality in the final third of the pitch, and resilience at the end when their opponents inevitably piled forward.
Coutinho skipped his way through a hesitant Villa defence to open the scoring, after Delph had gifted the ball to the Merseysiders:

Liverpool transfer gossip
It has been a transitional season for Brendan Rodgers’ side, who look set to miss out on a place in the Premier League’s top four, and it certainly looks like new additions could be needed in five key areas to fire the club back into the Champions League.
First, EOTK feel Liverpool need a new goalkeeper. Even with Simon Mignolet improving in the second half of the season, it is understandable that he is just short of being top quality for a club of this size.
Right-back is also a priority due to Glen Johnson’s likely departure as he nears the end of his contract, with the former England defender falling out of favour in recent times.

Steven Gerrard’s departure also leaves an obvious gap in midfield, with new signings needed to play alongside the impressive Jordan Henderson, as Joe Allen still doesn’t quite look capable of being first choice.
In another possible player exit, new signings may be needed out wide to cope with Raheem Sterling’s uncertain situation, with youngsters Jordan Ibe and Lazar Markovic not yet ready to be regular starters.
Upfront, Daniel Sturridge’s injury woes this term also mean investment is clearly needed upfront, with Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert not doing the business this year after last summer’s exit of Luis Suarez.

Brendan Rodgers claims Liverpool FA Cup final wouldn’t be the biggest game of his managerial career

Instead the former Swansea City man believes that when he took the Welsh team to the Championship play final will always be the most important match he has been involved in. The Northern Irishman led the Swans to the Premier League with a 4-2 win over Reading at Wembley back in 2011.
Rodgers said: “Swansea’s play-off final was the biggest game for me and always will be so it is not about pipping it – it would be exactly the same if we were to get to a Champions League final,” said Rodgers of his success with the south Wales club in 2011.”
He said: “I’d only been a manager a short time and I will always say it was my biggest game because it is a life-changing game. There are more prestigious games in football in terms of trophies but the play-off final, in terms of career and life and where it projects you to, is a big game.
“That game will always be the biggest game in my career but this game will be something different.”
If the Merseyside club beat Aston Villa on Sunday it will be the first time since 2012 that they have got to the final of a competition. They lost the FA Cup to Chelsea but won the League Cup that season.
Reds fans may want their manager to be more in awe of the situation than he currently seems, but at least it means he won’t be affected by the pressure of the occasion.

ESPN – Luis Suarez and magical Lionel Messi impress for Barcelona vs. Valencia
ESPN FC's Craig Burley compliments Barcelona's three points against an 'excellent' Valencia side. Goals in the opening and dying seconds gave Barcelona a 2-0 win over Valencia and meant they momentarily stretched their lead to five points over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, ahead of their rivals' game with Malaga on Saturday night. However it was far from a vintage performance from the leaders, who were completely outplayed in the first half and looked nervy and tired after their exploits against Paris Saint-Germain in midweek. Valencia were undefeated in 10 La Liga games before this one…
